My pet peeves

Hello readers,

I loathe being diplomatic but I can be blunt and though I'm a nutritionist I tend to be truthful (brutally). This blog is made solely to connect with you on a more basic level.

First things first- I've seen many men at gym who compliment other men for their weight loss even though their stomachs are clearly bigger than a pregnant woman's. Yet I come across comments like "Oh, wow. Aap ne tho itna wazan kum keea hay!" (Oh, wow. You've lost so much weight"). Much like the concept of society these compliments are fake and unreal. No one cares about your weight loss, the only one who does and should care is you yourself. If your stomach's hanging lower than your body can handle, chances are that it's time you lose weight. Start off by controlling your diet.
This also applies to women. I've heard 'nice' words about a woman's weight loss and women often tend to fall for these compliments. Common compliments include- "Haye, thum tho dundi bun gayee ho!" (Oh, my God you've become a stick!). If I weren't so concerned about my own health I'd probably gag myself just to express my disgust at the fake-ness oozing out of these sugary comments.
DO NOT FORGET, YOU'RE LOSING WEIGHT FOR YOURSELF, NOT FOR THEM.

Another thing I've come to hear often is- "I eat SO little yet I just keep gaining weight! WHY?!" Of course, the supposed shock is followed by a mild gasp or an expression of annoyance.
For Heaven's sake- if you weigh a lot and you eat NOTHING how do you think you're going to lose weight? If Lindsay Lohan is your idol I can understand your determination (even she's actually unhealthy) but if you're looking at actresses on the television and you want physiques similar to theirs understand one thing - THAT IS NEVER GOING TO BE YOU- SIMPLY BECAUSE YOU'RE NOT PATIENT ENOUGH TO REDUCE WEIGHT!

Seriously, I've seen so many men and women with so much potential. The only thing stopping them from reaching their goals is the lack of determination, nothing else- just that. Weight loss is not an easy process. Unlike what most people think (especially in Lahore), no one can lose weight fast and look good because it's just not possible. I swear, every time I hear someone say "So, like, I want to lose a lot of weight, like, REALLY FAST" I just feel the need to have a few panadols and tell the person "So, like, you're not blonde SO LOSE THE 'LIKE' and it's simply not possible to lose weight that fast!!"
I always get a sigh of sadness when I tell people this and I know it sucks but here's the truth- you took a lot of time packing on the chubs, be patient and you'll lose it. Patience is key.

Liposuction and anorexia seems to be the new trend amongst people in most urban cities in Pakistan. If people spent as much money on good food, nutritionists and a gym membership as they do on liposuction they'd probably be better off. Where anorexia is concerned, people completely stop eating or they eat less than a new-born bird. I feel like shaking them and saying- "EAT FOR GOD'S SAKE!" but then I fear they may actually eat and then shove their fingers down their throats to vomit it all out.  Seriously, people here need to eat well and healthy. Not eating for days (or even one or two days) could harm your body just as much as unhealthy foods do. So EAT. If you don't put petrol in your car, would you be able to use the car? NO. Similarly, your body needs food to function! This really shouldn't come as a shock.

Societal/familial pressure- family members and friends often comment on how much weight their "loved ones" lose or have lost. They simply judge weight loss or gain from a standard point of view- being healthy and being fat (despite what many people here believe) is not the same thing. So the next time you have an obviously fat stomach and someone tells you that you've lost weight or look good, don't get flattered. Before you let such a comment boost your ego, don't forget that you're the only one who knows what you look like without clothes on. If you're fat, you're fat. Do yourself a favor and come to terms with it.

I'll soon be coming up with another post. Very soon.
